After-School Strategies

Out-of-school time offers rich opportunities to support youth development and fuel a child’s natural desire to learn. Positive experiences in recreational activities and the development of positive relationships with staff and peers often motivates a child to get excited about learning, and that excitement then translates into improved academic performance.

High quality after-school activities seek to create connections with the curriculum and instruction offered in the classroom, however, they do not duplicate that instruction. The key to a successful after-school program rests on the planning and cooperation among all stakeholders: administrators, teachers, after-school staff, parents and students.

The Center consults with schools and community organizations in designing after-school programs and strategies that foster learning and introduce and support children and teenagers in healthy leisure-time activities. In doing so, it draws upon over 25 years of experience in youth development and in designing 21st Century Community Learning Centers.
